Purpose
The National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME) was founded in 1990 to bring together individuals from all academic levels and disciplines and from diverse educational institutions, and other organizations, occupations and communities who had an interest in multicultural education. NAME is committed to a philosophy of inclusion that embraces the basic tenets of democracy and cultural pluralism.

Building on the purpose and philosophy of NAME, The Georgia chapter of NAME (GA NAME) is a collective of critical and creative individuals who view education as an integral part of societal change and human development.

We act on our independent and interdependent responsibility to address visible and invisible dimensions of identity while challenging inequities manifested in individual, structural, and institutional facets of education.

A primary purpose of GA NAME is to mobilize towards a vision of becoming through transformation of self, school, and society. We are moving away from dehumanizing political, social, historical, and economic inequities and building towards an ideal of a just and equitable environment for humanity established through agency and advocacy concerning education both inside and outside the classroom. As we move forward we must investigate, complicate, and utilize history to inform our present consciousness.

GA NAME acknowledges that change is a continual process that involves struggle, discomfort, and tension. We engage in the process, through praxis, encouraging a mosaic of perspectives regarding the definitions and goals of this type of work. Therefore, we commit to continuing dialog and see it as a healthy part of advancing, interpreting, and implementing our association’s goals and objectives.
